Rostov-na-Donu is one of the most important cities in the south of Russia and is called "The Gates of the Caucasus". It is located in the southern part of the East-European Plato. It lies partly in the North Caucasian Region, covering a vast territory in the basin of the Don River. Rostov-na-Donu was founded in 1749 at the place formally occupied by the Temernic Custom-House.

Rostov-na-Donu is a city with more than 1 million residents and is also the industrial, scientific and cultural center of the North Caucasus area. The development of the economy in the Don Region originates from the rich natural resources. Eighty per cent of regional output is related to fuel and energy. Timber, woodworking and paper industries, light industries, housing construction, machine building and food industries are the principal branches of the regional industry.

The city suffered much damage in World War II and had to be rebuilt after the war. Rostov-na-Donu has experienced considerable economic growth in recent years, as the Russian economy recovers nationwide. Numerous start-up companies have established headquarters in the city, the median income is increasing, and Rostov-na-Donu is being transformed from a place thrown back in time by the collapse of communism into a modern, industrial and technology-rich hub.

Rostov-na-Donu is well-known of its cultural and folk traditions. Don Region the region of wide open spaces, the place where the Don river flows down into the Azov sea. Its prominent history and folklore attracts tourists from all over the world.
